FAQS

How does the L'il Back Bracer provide support?

The L’il Back Bracer is an orthopedic support garment for dogs suffering with IVDD or other back injuries.  The brace is made of a very high quality breathable and antimicrobial neoprene that is very comfortable for your dog.  There are stays that line the back and abdomen to provide the needed support and stabilization of the spine.

How often should my dog wear the brace?

It depends on you and your dog.  Some pet parents will put the back brace on all day (up to 14 hours) while some just use our back brace for walks or times of high activity and play.  The back brace is flexible, so it allows the muscles to engage and ‘work’, it is not like a stiff cast.  This is important so that the muscles do not become weak from wearing the brace.

*Please note that our dog back brace is not meant to replace the crate rest period that is prescribed by your Veterinarian.

Can I leave the brace on my dog all day?

This brace is not meant to be worn all day. You may leave the brace on your dog for up to 14 hours a day. However, be sure to remove the brace when your dog is resting, this will prevent irritation and allow their body to air out. Check for any signs of irritation after removing the brace.

Please remove the brace before your dog goes to bed at night and when they are resting for long periods of time.

Can my dog “do their business” while wearing this back brace?

Yes, our back brace fits in a way that leaves that area of your dog free to take care of business without the brace blocking that part of their body.

Does my dog need to have a separate harness for walks?

The L’il Back Bracer has an attached “D” ring so when taking walks the brace acts as a harness.  Just attach the leash to the ring and enjoy a safe supported walk.

How do I care for the brace?

To clean the brace just hand wash and lay flat to dry.  For removing hair, we have found that a rubber pet hair remover brush works best.

Can my dog jump with the brace on?

The L'il Back Bracer stabilizes the spinal column (from about where a collar would sit) and its snug fit provides overall comfort. While all dogs and all cases can vary, the L'il Back Bracer has successfully helped in many cases with increased mobility and relief. The feedback we have received on dogs regaining their mobility or at least increasing it has been tremendous.

As far as "jumping", it depends on whether your l'il one will continue to jump with the brace on. Our L'il Back Bracer's design is flexible, not like a stiff cast, so they are able to move as they normally would - just with a l'il support. Some dogs keep real still with the brace on and do not jump or run due to the calming effect the snug fit has on the nervous system, while some dogs resume their normal activity while wearing it.

Will my dog get muscle atrophy from the L'il Back Bracer?

No. Our back brace is lightweight. Helps give support down the spine.

What if my dog doesn’t like it?

It is not uncommon for dogs to not love the brace straight away.  A natural thing for them is to sit still or whimper when wearing it because they aren’t sure what to do with the brace on. To help with this, we recommend a break-in period of 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off. Give your dog a treat and praise him/her for wearing the brace. This will hopefully allow your l'il one to associate the brace being a good thing. Increase the amount of time each day until they can wear the brace up to 14 hours.

Can the brace be worn in the water?

Yes. The material is a breathable, neoprene material.  Recommended washing instructions is: hand wash and then air dry. Do not put a wet brace on your dog as this may cause irritation.

I was skeptical..

I have a younger Corgi, less than 2 years old at the time of purchasing. He had hurt himself pretty badly at around 6-7 months old by being a rambunctious pup- as nothing showed up on the x-ray, he was diagnosed with a torn groin muscle and put on crate rest. A nightmare for a rambunctious pup! Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of his pain and it continued to get worse. Over the next almost year, he would randomly not be able to walk well for a few days and would clearly be in pain. The vet was at a loss and finally recommended an orthopedic specialist, with a price point of several thousands of dollars. Although we were willing to do anything and pay anything, it seemed like relief was still way too far away. The final straw was when he was going through another episode and it was the worst one yet. He couldn’t even sleep as he was unable to get any relief without taking the weight off of his neck completely. He would seek out a pillow and rest his head/weight on it. I said that was it and immediately began searching for braces. I offered a lil back bracer the same day. This was 4 months, possibly 5 months ago now- and my baby has not had a single episode since. We make sure he wears it when he plays but doesn’t need to wear it otherwise. The only possible time he’s had any mild signs of pain is when we’ve forgotten to put it on prior to a play session, though this has actually only happened once. Going from episodes once a month, to none in 4-5 months has given my, still very young and rambunctious, Corgi a new lease on life and I couldn’t be more grateful for that. He has been tested for any genetic, blood, bacteria, and viral diseases- but we suspect the injury when he was still young never had a chance to heal and continued to get worse as it’s impossible to keep him down for long. I know he will be forever grateful as well, though he doesn’t even know how lucky he is we found this brace. We were even advised that he did not need to visit the orthopedic specialist if the brace is working and he is no longer showing signs of pain, though we still may in the future just to be sure. I never want to see my baby in the pain he was in prior to the brace and I don’t believe I’ll ever have to. Thank you so much for giving him his life back!

Hi Naomi,
Oh wow this is so amazing to hear! I am so glad your sweet corgi is doing much better and he can be active and play more confidently. We hope he doesn't have another episode again down the line. Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for taking the time to write us a review and share your story.

A Miracle for Our Mini Dachshund

Our 15 year old mini dachshund Roxy was just recently diagnosed with IVDD and was walking very wobbly and barely able to keep her balance in her back legs as well as not having much of an appetite. After a few days of wearing her brace she was miraculously able to walk perfect like before her diagnosis and has been eating much better. Now on a sore or hard day for Roxy we put her brace on as maintenance and she seems to be doing alot better and we are so glad to have found this product. We felt like there was little we could do for her before. This product is a miracle for helpless feeling dog parents who were looking for anything to help out their sweet old lady.

L'il back bracer

love it, had a problem with the adhesive sticking, sent us a new one. Might be the hair that sticks preventing it from closing. Using a dog metal brush to keep the hair from building up in that area. Also a vacuum head for cleaning furniture that might keep the adhesive area clear of hair build up. Benji has no problem wearing the brace, very comfortable and supports his back where needed. Beautifully made, even though it keeps opening, we will find a way to handle it. One thought is using a "Bra" closing with the 3 small hooks, to keep it closed as opposed to relying on the adhesive. Many cleaners do clothing alterations and would have the right needle to attach the bra snap. Need a 2nd one for Cody, smaller dog, just waiting to see how the closing stays on Benji's. Well made project, vet loved it also. Benji doesn't cry out when getting excited and moving around because he pinches a nerve. A must for every dog that has IVDD.

Hey Irene,
Very helpful tips for others to read. Thank you very much for taking the time and writing a review! We wish you and Benji the best.
